Photoaging is a term for skin damage caused by UV exposure. UV radiation accelerates the natural aging process by destroying collagen and interrupting elastin production. Besides causing wrinkles and loose skin, photoaging is responsible for pigmentation problems such as melasma. Excessive sun exposure can also cause precancerous lesions and damaged blood vessels.
While using products with high levels of sun protective factor (SPF) can help protect skin from UVA and UVB, they are not enough to stop photoaging. Skin experts advise wearing a wide hat and avoiding the midday sun. Applying topical products containing antioxidants and retinol can also help reverse DNA damage.
